Jennifer Lopez is coming back to TV as a series regular after a two-decade-plus hiatus in NBC’s new cop drama “Shades of Blue.” Lopez shared a preview for the show on her Facebook page Sunday, and it’s safe to say that “Shades of Blue” will offer shades of “Enough” J. Lo as opposed to her rom-com side — more unapologetic ass-kicking, less doe eyes.
The “Lila & Eve” actress last starred in a television series in 1994, CBS’s short-lived “Hotel Malibu” — pre-”Selena,” pre-international stardom. The multi-talented performer has become something of a fixture on the small screen for her judging duties on “American Idol,” but “Shades of Blue” will mark Lopez’s first time acting in television since a guest spot on “How I Met Your Mother” in 2010.
Lopez plays NYPD detective Harlee Santos, a trusted friend, devoted single mom and team player who just so happens to be a dirty cop. She’s loyal to her lieutenant boss to a fault because she feels as though she “owe[s] him everything.” But what kind of person and officer of the law is Santos following? The kind who says, “Sometimes the right decision isn’t in the book” and encourages her to take bribes from drug dealers.
Santos is arrested mid-illegal exchange and pressured by the FBI to inform on her mentor, a ringleader of corruption in the force. “Who we think we are and who we turn out to be — are they ever the same?” asks Santos.
“Shades of Blue,” which was originally scheduled to debut January 14, will premiere January 7 on NBC. Lopez is also serving as an executive producer on the series.
