Here’s the 21st-century romantic comedy you’ve been waiting for.
Writer-director Gilian Robespierre’s Obvious Child features former SNL castmember Jenny Slate as a stand-up comedienne named Donna. She has a great date with Max (Jake Lacy), and tries to make it work with him even though she’s considering aborting the fetus they accidentally conceived together on an early date.
What looks great about Obvious Child is that, although the film deals with potentially fraught issues, it’s like last year’s Frances Ha in that it sails through with an optimistic buoyancy that feels fresh and honest, even when dealing with relatively serious issues.
Gaby Hoffman co-stars as Donna’s BFF, and her character appears to be a departure from all the crazy-chick roles she’s had the past year.
Obvious Child opens on June 6.
