Jessica Biel is behind another gory, gruesome attack in “Candy.” The Emmy-nominated star of “The Sinner” once again finds herself at the center of a murder investigation in “Candy,” a Hulu crime drama based on a true story. A new trailer for the project, set in 1980, introduces us to Candy (Biel), a seemingly picture-perfect mom, wife, friend, and churchgoer.
“I am so touched by your generosity, the compassion and friendship you’ve shown. You’re just a sweetheart,” Candy’s best friend, Betty Gore (Melanie Lynskey, “Yellowjackets”), gushes.
But Candy is not who she seems. She’s having an affair with Betty’s husband, and when she’s reminded by a confidant that he’s married, she responds, “I know, but don’t I deserve more?”
When Candy becomes convinced that Betty knows about the affair, she takes matters into her own hands, killing her best friend with an axe. No one seems to suspect Candy at first. Instead, police are “looking for some kind of crazy drifter,” a “strong man.” As one character observes, “Swinging an axe 41 times, that ain’t easy.”
“WandaVision’s” Elizabeth Olsen is set to play Montgomery in HBO Max’s “Love & Death,” expected later this year. Lily Rabe (“American Horror Story”) portrays Gore.
“Candy” drops on Hulu May 9. Robin Veith, a three-time Emmy nominee for “Mad Men” whose more recent work includes “The Act,” penned its pilot.
