“Hester Street” is getting a makeover. A new 4K restoration of Joan Micklin Silver’s portrait of an Eastern European Jewish couple living in New York’s Lower East Side in the late 19th century is on the way. A trailer for the freshly minted version of the 1975 Carol-Kane starrer features no dialogue but introduces us to Gitl (Kane) and Yankel (Steven Keats), immigrants who are having very different experiences in the U.S.
Gitl is adjusting to life abroad and has begun an affair with a dancer, while Gitl struggles to adapt.
Kane, whose recent credits include “Hunters” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” received an Oscar nod for “Hester Street.” The film marked Silver’s feature debut. The “Crossing Delancey” filmmaker died in 2020.
The new restoration of “Hester Street” will have its New York premiere at the New York Film Festival September 25 and is set to open at the Quad in NYC and the Nuart in LA October 1.
