“On the surface, ‘Greener Grass’ is a comedy satirizing suburbia, but to us it’s a horror movie,” writer-directors Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe told Women and Hollywood ahead of the film’s Sundance premiere. A trailer for the brightly-hued pic just arrived, and it’s easy to see the horror influences in the filmmakers’ feature debut.
Set in a world where people wear braces over their “already-straight teeth, everyone drives golf carts, and children magically turn into golden retrievers, soccer moms and best friends Jill (DeBoer) and Lisa (Luebbe) are locked in a passive aggressive battle-of-the-wills that takes a turn into the sinister when Lisa begins systematically taking over every aspect of Jill’s life — starting with her newborn daughter,” the film’s synopsis details.
“Would it be possible for me to get the baby I gave you back?” Jill asks Lisa in the trailer. “It doesn’t hurt to ask, right?” she begs her unsympathetic frenemy.
“Greener Grass” is based on DeBoer and Luebbe’s short film of the same name.
“We love comparing similarities in our upbringings as Midwestern middle children in oh-so idyllic suburbs and taking specifics from our own lives and twisting them to fit our ‘Greener Grass’ world,” the filmmakers told us. “We felt that now, more than ever, was a great time to explore, not the people in power, but the polite society in this funhouse-mirror, timeless suburbia with its roots in … eras of economic prosperity and social conservatism.”
“Greener Grass” opens in NY and hits VOD October 18.
