In the third season of HBO’s Veep, Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) will run to become the first female president of the United States of America.
If you think there’s anything remotely inspirational about that prospect, chances are you haven’t been watching Veep. Armando Ianucci’s series is just a hair less cynical about D.C. than Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal. In the world of Veep, politics is just a neverending series of performances in front of the camera and a competition between people who utterly loathe each other to see who can amass the largest collection of toys at the end of the day.
Oh, and it’s profanely hilarious in a way very few TV shows even attempt to be. As the likable but grasping Selina, Louis-Dreyfus anchors an exceptionally strong cast of aides to the VP — all of whom are on the chopping block in the third season. A potential election adviser (Diedrich Bader) breezes into town and urges Selina to fire her entire staff for incompetence or indifference. “I can maximize your chances of becoming the most powerful person on earth,” he promises in the 90-second trailer. Selina grins.
