Trailer Watch: June Is a Resistance Leader in “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 3

The second season finale of “The Handmaid’s Tale” saw June, the series’ narrator and protagonist, opting to stay in the fundamentalist totalitarian state of Gilead instead of getting out along with her infant daughter. That jaw-dropping decision makes more sense thanks to a new trailer for the Hulu series’ third season: June (Elisabeth Moss) is now a full-fledged leader in the resistance.

Officially, June informs us in the spot, “there is no resistance” to Gilead’s regime. When a citizen acts out or questions, well, anything, they’re not “resisting,” they’re heretics. If we’re using that terminology, it seems safe to say that June will be wholeheartedly embracing “heresy” this season. She’s planning to destroy Gilead from the inside.

“If I’m going to change things, I’m going to need allies. Allies with power,” June says. So she enlists Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski), the wife of one of Gilead’s top Commanders; Nick (Max Minghella), an Eye, i.e. a member of Gilead’s law enforcement; and the acerbic Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) in her fight.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s seminal feminist novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has received 11 Emmys, including the Outstanding Drama Series prize, among numerous other accolades. Moss and co-stars Ann Dowd, Alexis Bledel, and Samira Wiley have all picked up Emmys for their performances, as well.

Atwood’s sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Testaments,” hits shelves September 10. The novel picks up 15 years after the events of the original.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” returns June 5. Check out the trailer to see Bledel’s character, Emily, arriving in Canada with June’s baby.
