“I’m finished with this war,” Selene (Kate Beckinsale) says. “Well, it’s not finished with you,” David (Theo James, “Divergent”) replies.
And so Selene, the heroine of the “Underworld” franchise, is pulled back into the fight in the “Underworld: Blood Wars” trailer. “Blood Wars” is the fifth film in the action-horror franchise.
According to its official synopsis, the latest “Underworld” installment “follows Vampire death dealer Selene as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David and his father, Thomas (Charles Dance, ‘Game of Thrones’), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.”
Since both the Lycan and Vampire clans are after Selene’s — and her daughter’s — blood, this “ultimate sacrifice” will no doubt be heartbreaking for the film’s heroine. As Selene herself says in the trailer, “Everyone I’ve ever loved has been hunted down.”
The “Underworld” movies are a lucrative blockbuster franchise. The four previous installments have grossed a combined $458 million worldwide.
“Blood Wars” is the first “Underworld” film with a woman director: Anna Foerster, in her film directorial debut. This has been a long time coming, as confirmed by the trailer’s press release. A “series about a powerful female lead deserves a powerful woman behind the camera!” it states.
Foerster’s previous directing credits include episodes of “Outlander” — including the famous “The Wedding” — “Criminal Minds,” and “Unforgettable.” She has also served as the cinematographer on “White House Down” and “Anonymous.” Foerster was the visual effects cinematographer on “Independence Day” and “Godzilla.” Her filmography makes her “the perfect fit to navigate and direct the fantasy and action-filled next installment of the of the ‘Underworld’ series,” the press release states.
We couldn’t agree more.
“Underworld: Blood Wars” hits theaters January 6, 2017.
