Lesbian progress on the big screen has come a long way, which may be why “Jenny’s Wedding,” which stars Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel as lovers on the verge of tying the knot despite homophobic reservations from family members, feels a bit old-fashioned.
But the familial disapproval facing Jenny (Heigl) and Kitty (Bledel) will certainly ring true for many LGBTQ individuals. Perhaps what’s most interesting about writer-director Mary Agnes Donoghue’s sophomore directorial effort is that Jenny revealing she’s gay doesn’t distance her from her parents, but her accepting mom (Linda Edmond) and her disapproving dad (Tom Wilkinson) from each other. That certainly makes for a more complex family dynamic — and thus richer narrative material.
Donoghue is the screenwriter behind “Beaches,” “White Oleander” and “Veronica Guerin.” “Jenny’s Wedding” comes out July 31st and will be available on VOD the following day.
