“It’s not that hard to be a decent fucking mom,” says Katherine Ryan in a new trailer for “The Duchess.” The Netflix comedy sees the stand-up comedian playing a single mom who becomes convinced her daughter Olive can’t be an only child. Katherine (Ryan) hasn’t been in a “serious” relationship since separating from Olive’s dad, a boy band star, while their daughter was still a baby.
Asked why she’s considering a second child, Katherine tells a doctor, “My entire family are dead to me, so when Olive was born I was all alone, but now we have each other.” A friend suggests that Katherine’s dynamic with the nine-year-old is problematic, and tells her they “shouldn’t be equals” or “acting like you’re sisters.” Still, Katherine is undeterred. She’s less interested in creating boundaries with Olive than giving her a sibling. Katherine demands that her ex, whom she considers her greatest enemy, provide sperm to inseminate her to ensure that both kids “are going to have a shit dad.”
“The Duchess” premieres on Netflix September 11. Ryan created the series.
