A new trailer has been released for “The Great Gilly Hopkins,” Lionsgate Premiere’s upcoming adaptation of Katherine Paterson’s National Book Award-winning 1978 children’s novel.
The family film, a dramedy, follows Gilly (Sophie Nelisse, “The Book Thief”), a brazen 11-year-old who is frustrated about being shuffled between foster homes. What she really wants is to live with Courtney (Julia Stiles, “Jason Bourne,” “Dexter,”) her birth mother. While Gilly’s latest foster mom, Trotter (Kathy Bates, “American Horror Story”), is warm and welcoming, Gilly doesn’t feel at home, and concocts a plan to run away to be with Courtney. Glenn Close (“Damages”) and Octavia Spencer (“The Help”) co-star.
The trailer shows that while Gilly has attitude to spare — she quips about her new house stinking like cats and yells at her new foster brother — she’s also brave, smart, and fiercely protective. And this underdog has a lot of love and support from her teacher and foster family. “You’re a part of me,” Trotter tells her. “Nobody can ever take that away.”
“The Great Gilly Hopkins” is directed by Stephen Herek (“101 Dalmatians,” “The Mighty Ducks”) and opens in theaters October 7. You can also catch it on VOD.
