In 2017, Kathy Griffin sparked an international controversy when she posed holding what she describes as “a freaking mask with ketchup on it.” That mask was made to resemble a beheaded, bloody Donald Trump. A trailer has arrived for “Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story,” a documentary comedy that sees the stand-up revisiting the scandal that rocked the nation — and endangered her life.
Besides facing death threats, Griffin was warned she may go to jail for the photo-op. “They are considering charging you with conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States, which holds a lifetime sentence,” Griffin was told. Still, she’s able to make light of her circumstances. “There’s no situation that doesn’t need comedy,” she emphasizes.
The clip includes footage of Griffin urging her stand-up audience to defend the First Amendment, and sharing hilarious details about threatening letters that were sent to her house.
“Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story” made its world premiere at SXSW in March and will open the inaugural 51Fest on July 18. You can catch the film in theaters July 31 only.
