Trailer Watch: Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern Revisit a Shocking Literary Hoax in “JT LeRoy”

"J.T. LeRoy"

Kristen Stewart moves to New York City and finds herself playing the role of a celebrated author in a new trailer for “JT LeRoy.” Savannah’s (Stewart) life takes an unexpected turn when their sister-in-law confides a secret. Laura (Laura Dern) writes books under the name of JT LeRoy, which she describes as her “avatar.” She then encourages Savannah to explore “all these selves” inside of themselves by assuming JT’s identity in public appearances.

Based on a true story, “JT Leroy” sees Savannah trying to adjust to the limelight and the complications of pretending to be someone they are not. “You’re as much a part of JT as me,” Laura tells them. But the balancing act is taking a toll on Savannah, and they want out.

“Personal Shopper” and “Certain Women” are among Stewart’s more recent credits. Her upcoming projects include blockbuster survival thriller “Underwater,” Elizabeth Banks’ “Charlie’s Angels” reboot, and Clea DuVall rom-com “Happiest Season.”

Dern is reprising her role as Renata in “Big Little Lies'” upcoming second season. Besides the HBO murder mystery, her recent credits include “Cold Pursuit,” “The Tale,” and “Twin Peaks.” She’ll play Marmee March in Greta Gerwig’s take on “Little Women,” currently slated for release December 25.

“JT LeRoy” made its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival and hits select theaters and VOD April 26. Check out the trailer to see why Savannah’s evolving relationship with a filmmaker (Diane Kruger) causes Laura to panic.
