Who is Jean Seberg? A new trailer for a biopic about the controversial French New Wave star asks that very question.
Based on true events, the pic is set in the ’60s and sees Kristen Stewart playing the “Breathless” actress. Jean finds herself targeted by the FBI due to her support of the civil rights movement and her romantic relationship with Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), a prominent activist.
“This country is at war with itself. Vietnam, the oppression of black people in America — it’s the same disgusting racism,” Jean says. Despite being warned that the feds will “destroy” her reputation, career, and family, Jean won’t be intimidated into silence. “To defame somebody who speaks out against their government is a type of persecution,” she observes.
“JT LeRoy,” “Certain Women,” and “Personal Shopper” are among Stewart’s recent credits. You can catch the “Twilight” alumna in Elizabeth Banks’ reboot of “Charlie’s Angels,” in theaters November 15.
“Seberg” made its world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival and hits theaters December 13.
Check out the trailer to see Jean face personal and political accusations — including ending two marriages and running around “with a handful of nails looking for a cross to die on.”
