“It’s so lovely to think that, if I were a man, people would listen and say OK. That’d be so restful,” says Laura Dern in the new trailer for Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain Women.” Preach, girl.
Dern stars along with Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, and newcomer Lily Gladstone in Reichardt’s latest, which explores the intersecting lives of four women in the American Northwest, Reichardt’s stomping grounds.
As IFC Films’ official synopsis details, the story follows “a lawyer (Dern) who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother (Williams) whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student (Stewart) who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand (radiant newcomer Lily Gladstone). As their stories intersect in subtle but powerful ways, a portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.”
Reichardt’s signature visual style and lovely camera work are evident in the new trailer, which finds Stewart beginning her first day of teaching, Dern strapping on a bullet-proof vest, and Williams giving some serious side eye to her husband.
“Certain Women” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and will play at TIFF and NYFF before opening on October 14.
