Trailer Watch: Kristin Scott Thomas & Sharon Horgan Form a Choir with Their Fellow “Military Wives”

"Military Wives"

Kate (Kristin Scott Thomas) needs something to occupy her time — and worrying mind — while her colonel husband is off on his fifth tour in Afghanistan. So, as we see in the new trailer for “Military Wives,” she recruits other wives with deployed spouses to form a singing club.

It’s not all smooth sailing. The fastidious Kate butts heads with the go-with-the flow Lisa (Sharon Horgan). “Reading music makes things a bit stilted,” Lisa says, as she declines sheet music for the piano. “Not sure Mozart would agree with that,” Kate mumbles back passive-aggressively.

Plus, it takes some time for the women to find their sound. “That was like the incantations of a bunch of witches,” Lisa quips after their first rehearsal. “If you think singing with a pole up your arse is what the women need, then you’re more out of touch than I thought,” she tells Kate.

Obviously, the women also have a lot going on in their personal lives — such as taking caring of their children solo and constantly fretting about their husbands.”I just feel sick all the time,” one woman confesses, “every time the phone rings, every time the doorbell goes.” The possibility of their loves ones’ deaths hangs over everything, even as the group improves and scores an invite to the Festival of Remembrance.

Thomas was last seen in “Fleabag.” A five-time BAFTA nominee, she’s known for her Oscar-nominated role in “The English Patient” and titles such as “Four Weddings and Funeral,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Darkest Hour.”

Horgan co-created, co-wrote, and co-starred in marriage tragicomedy “Catastrophe,” which ended its four-season run last year. She received an Emmy nod for her writing on the series. The multi-hyphenate’s recent screen credits include “This Way Up” and “Game Night.”

“Military Wives” will make its NY premiere during the Athena Film Festival, taking place February 27-March 1, and hits theaters March 27. Rachel Tunnard (“Adult Life Skills”) and Rosanne Flynn (“The Labyrinth”) penned the script.
