Lena Waithe made Emmy history back in 2017 when she became the first Black woman to take home the honor for comedy writing. She was recognized for co-writing “Thanksgiving,” an episode in “Master of None’s” second season that depicted her character’s coming out journey. It’s been four years since “Master of None’s” second season dropped, and its return to Netflix will see Denise (Waithe) switching gears from supporting character to series lead.
Titled “Moments in Love,” “Master of None’s” third season focuses on Denise and her partner Alicia’s (Naomi Ackie, “The End of the F***ing World”) relationship. A new trailer for the series sees Denise presenting Alicia with a hypothetical. “Let’s say we’re at a party. Maxwell is playing. You don’t know me. I don’t know you. I ask you out on a date. Would you say yes?” she asks. A montage of the couple’s highlights and lowlights play out with glimpses of romantic dancing and bitter arguments.
Waithe co-wrote Season 3 with Aziz Ansari, who created “Master of None” with Alan Yang. Ansari was accused of sexual misconduct in 2018. The first two seasons of the comedy centered on his character, Dev, who does not appear in the trailer for Season 3.
“The Chi” and “Westworld” are among Waithe’s on-screen credits. She created the former, which is set to return for its fourth season on Showtime May 23. The “Queen & Slim” screenwriter also created “Boomerang” and “Twenties,” both of which air on BET. No word on whether or not “Boomerang” will come back for a third season, but “Twenties” has been renewed for a second.
“Master of None” returns to Netflix May 23.
