Trailer Watch: Life Gets a Little More Complicated for Jessie and Tom in “Starstruck” Season 2

"Starstruck"

“Starstruck” is back — and Jessie (Rose Matafeo) and Tom (Nikesh Patel) are back together. A trailer has dropped for Season 2 of the HBO Max rom-com series, created and co-written by Matafeo.

The clip catches up with the couple shortly after Jessie’s Season 1-ending decision to stay in London and pursue things with Tom instead of heading home to New Zealand. While getting coffee, Jessie confesses to Tom she’s never been on a first date. “I actually prefer just to bump into someone, like, a number of times over a course of a year and then just sort of not get on a plane for them,” she jokes, basically summing up their relationship as well as the plot of Season 1.

Of course, this being a rom-com, love doesn’t come easily for Jessie and Tom. She, a normie, is afraid that he, a famous movie star, is embarrassed to be seen with her. He worries that the newfound public scrutiny is ruining her life. “No, I’ve been ruining my own life for, like, years now,” Jessie tells him.

Still, they manage have a good time together. One of Jessie’s new favorite things to do is to pretend to fight with Tom in public, in case any paparazzi are around: there is a lot of flailing, pantomiming, and bulging eyes. “You are worryingly convincing of this,” Tom says.

A stand-up comedian, Matafeo won the Best Comedy Show prize at the 2018 Edinburgh Comedy Awards for her show “Horndog,” which she filmed as a special for HBO Max. Her on-screen credits include “Baby Done,” “Dead Pixels,” and “Golden Boy.” She’s also directed several episodes of the latter.

“Starstruck” returns March 24 on HBO Max. Alice Snedden and Nic Sampson wrote Season 2 with Matafeo.
