Trailer Watch: Lily Tomlin is a ‘Grandma’ Who Knows When To Say “Screw You”

“I need some help, Grandma.”

Thankfully for someone in Sage’s (Julia Garner, “The Americans”) particular situation, her Grandma (Lily Tomlin) is just the kind of woman the young woman needs — the kind of caring relative you can ask to contribute to your abortion fund.

“Grandma,” which opened the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival, centers on its eponymous character Elle, a cranky seventysomething poet, who agrees to help her granddaughter find the money to terminate her unwanted pregnancy. The comedy also features Tomlin’s first lead performance in 27(!) years.

The newly released trailer shows that Elle doesn’t have a simple solution for her granddaughter: she’s broke and cut up her credit cards to make wind chimes, so they’ll have to hustle to find cash. This involves a very unpleasant encounter with the wholly charmless young man who is “kind of” Sage’s boyfriend (Nat Wolff).

The footage indicates that Elle loves Sage dearly, but is adamant about the fact that she should be more assertive. “You need to be able to say ‘screw you’ sometimes,” Grandma insists. She’s also stunned and outraged when Sage is unfamiliar with “The Feminine Mystique” (though Sage quickly mentions that she knows about a character named Mystique from “X-Men”).

Judy Greer, Marcia Gay Harden and Laverne Cox co-star. “Grandma” opens August 21.
