“The world is ageist,” says Liza (Sutton Foster) in the trailer for “Younger’s” fifth season. “And until that changes, I can’t play by the rules.” She, of course, is referencing the concept for the series and the Pamela Redmond Satran novel it’s based upon — a 40-something divorcée lies about her age to get a job at a publishing house — but Liza is flouting other rules, too.
Much of the spot teases Liza and her friend Kelsey’s (Hilary Duff) romantic entanglements. Both are playing the field and seeing multiple men. But instead of feeling untethered and enlightened, Liza is guilt-ridden. “You become what you do,” she observes. “If you cheat, you become a cheater. If you lie, you become a liar.”
And, unfortunately, the solution her BFF Maggie (Debi Mazar) suggests doesn’t do much to ease Liza’s worries. “My advice is, sneak around and do it like 30 times until the novelty wears off,” Maggie says. “Then, if it’s still hot, tell the truth, blow up your life, and maybe it will all be worth it.”
“Younger” Season 5 kicks off June 5 on TV Land.
