Trailer Watch: “Love, Gilda” Tells the Story of Comedy Legend Gilda Radner

Lisa D’Apolito's "Love, Gilda" will close out the summit

“There was so much in the world that had yet to be carved out for women,” says Amy Poehler in a new trailer for “Love, Gilda.” The “Parks and Rec” alumna is reflecting on the influence and impact of Gilda Radner, the first female performer chosen for “Saturday Night Live.” Poehler is just one of the women who followed in her footsteps on the iconic variety show. The spot also features clips of former “SNL” cast member Maya Rudolph and host Melissa McCarthy.

Lisa Dapolito’s documentary weaves together the story of Radner’s life and career by fusing together recently discovered audio tapes of the comedian, home movies, interviews with her friends, and diary entries read by Poehler and Co. Radner died at the age of 42 from ovarian cancer.

The trailer touches on the legend’s romance with Gene Wilder and the pressure the trailblazer was under at “SNL,” where her best known characters included Roseanne Roseannadanna, Emily Litella, and Lisa Loopner.

“I always felt I could do anything if people are laughing,” Radner says.

“Love, Gilda” opened this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. The doc hits theaters September 21.
