Mia (Maika Monroe, “It Follows”) isn’t impressed when Elliot (Jeremy Allen White, “Shameless”) starts chatting her up at subway stop in the trailer for “After Everything.” “I’m in the middle of a podcast,” she says when he compliments her headphones (and her appearance).
But Mia decides to give Elliot a chance when he confesses that he’s been diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a bone cancer. She’s the first one he’s shared the news with because she’s a stranger. “Just relative to the situation, everybody else would’ve freaked out,” he explains.
“I’m pretty freaked out,” Mia admits. “Yeah, me too, bro,” Elliot replies.
So starts Mia and Elliot’s love story. Despite his illness, the two dive into a relationship. The pair go through many of the hallmarks of long-term commitment (silly fun, matching tattoos, meeting the friends and parents, jealousy, marriage, wondering if the attraction will survive) in rapid succession, because their time together could be limited.
“After Everything” marks the feature directorial debut of both its directors, Hannah Marks and Joey Power. The duo also wrote the script.
Marisa Tomei, Gina Gershon, Sasha Lane (“American Honey”), and DeRon Horton (“Dear White People”) co-star.
Monroe’s credits include “The Tribes of Palos Verdes” and “The Guest.” You can catch her next in “The Widow,” alongside Chloë Grace Moretz and Isabelle Huppert. Due later this year, the dramatic thriller centers on the friendship between a young woman and a widow, the latter of whom turns out to have sinister intentions.
“After Everything” hits theaters and VOD October 12.
