Trailer Watch: Margaret Qualley Is Journalist in a Gambler’s Paradise in Claire Denis’ “Stars at Noon”

"Stars at Noon"

Claire Denis follows up “Fire,” a steamy romance about a love triangle with Juliette Binoche at its center, with another sexually-charged story in “Stars at Noon.” A trailer just dropped for the Margaret Qualley-starrer, which made its world premiere at Cannes, where it took home the Grand Prix.

Set in Nicaragua, the pic tells the story of Trish (Qualley), an American journalist who finds herself stranded in the country. One night at the bar, she crosses paths with Daniel (Joe Alwyn, “Conversations with Friends”), a mysterious Englishman who claims he’s in the country “on a charitable cause,” a story that sounds less believable when Trish discovers a gun with his belongings. It’s not long before she realizes that there’s more to her new lover than meets the eye. “This country is kind of like a gambler’s paradise,” she’s warned. “Everybody’s giving the odds a shake, whichever game they feel like playing.” She’s asked, “How long have you known him? How do you know he is who he says he is?

Denis’ credits include “35 Shots of Rum” and “Beau travail.” “Fire” was released earlier this year. “High Life” and “Let the Sunshine In” are also among her more recent films.

Qualley received Emmy nods for “Maid” and “Fosse/Verdon.” Her upcoming slate includes Coralie Fargeat’s follow-up to 2017’s “Revenge,” “The Substance,” which is being described as a “feminist take on body horror.”

“Stars at Noon” opens in theaters October 14 and launches on Hulu October 28.
