Trailer Watch: Marielle Heller’s Hormone-Charged Sundance Hit ‘The Diary of a Teenage Girl’

Minnie’s life has, by her own admission, “gone really crazy as of late.” She has sex for the first time, and her partner in action isn’t a gangly, pimple-plagued adolescent peer struggling to make sense of the mechanics of their respective bits. Minnie’s story is far less conventional, and decidedly more risque: She has sex with her mother’s boyfriend (Alexander Skarsgård, “True Blood”).

Sundance favorite “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” at long last has a trailer. Marielle Heller’s directorial debut, which she also wrote, stars Bel Powley as Minnie, a precocious and artistic teen who is “overwhelmed by [her] all-consuming thoughts about sex and men.”

Minnie’s mother (Kristen Wiig) suggests that Minnie’s post-puberty body gives her “a kind of power,” and “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” seems like it’ll explore how nascent female sexuality oscillates between being a gift and a curse, simultaneously empowering girls and rendering them vulnerable to predatory behavior.

Heller told Women and Hollywood that she hopes the film leaves people feeling “as though they went on an emotional journey with this brave character, and that they feel a little more connected to their own adolescent story. And I hope they’ve laughed a bit too.”

“The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” which is based on a graphic novel of the same name by Phoebe Gloeckner, will hit theatres August 7.
