“I needed a nuclear meltdown and I got it,” says Lance Armstrong in a new trailer for “Lance.” “I’m not going to lie to you, Marina. I’m going tell you my truth.” A two-part documentary, Marina Zenovich’s ESPN project promises a comprehensive look into “one of the most inspirational – and then infamous – athletes of all time,” according to its official synopsis.
The spot sees Armstrong and others weighing in on his evolving legacy and reputation. “He’s very good at making sure he’s one step removed from true responsibility of his actions,” we’re told.
The four-hour film is based around extensive interviews and conversations with the iconic cyclist as well as his family, teammates, friends, rivals, and journalists, and no one is holding back. “The talk is that this is Lance Armstrong’s effort to resurrect his reputation,” one interviewee explains, seemingly referring to the doc. The press materials for “Lance” emphasize that it will encourage viewers to “make [their] own interpretations about the many different sides of a complex saga.”
A seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor, Armstrong’s global reputation as a role model and hero transformed overnight when he was exposed in one of the largest doping scandals in history.
“Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind,” “Water & Power: A California Heist,” and “Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic” are among Zenovich’s other credits.
Part 1 of “Lance” premieres on ESPN May 24 at 9 p.m. ET. Part 2 will follow May 31 at 9 p.m. ET.
