Trailer Watch: Mary Elizabeth Winstead Is a Stand-Up With a Complicated Past in “All About Nina”

"All About Nina"

Mary Elizabeth Winstead takes center stage in a new trailer for “All About Nina.” The critically acclaimed dark comedy sees the “Fargo” alumna playing a stand-up comic. Onstage, she’s killing it. Backstage, not so much.

Nina (Winstead) wins over audiences with frank jokes about tampons and not being “the type of girl you’d want to bring home,” but behind the scenes she’s struggling to be honest with herself and others.

Hoping to make a fresh start, Nina ditches the abusive guy she’s involved with (Chace Crawford, “Gossip Girl”) and moves to LA. It’s there that she finds a man (Common, “Selma”) she finds “funny, sexy, and just the right amount of screwed up.” But it looks like Nina will have to deal with her past before she can move on with her career and personal life.

“It’s not so much that I was drawn to the story as needed to get it out of my head. It’s more or less my story, or at least part of my story, summarized into a neat 97 minutes, and I had been wanting to tell it one way or another for a long time,” writer-director Eva Vives told us. She added, “I would love it if survivors watching it felt understood and hopeful by the end —  hopeful that you can go through something harrowing like rape or sexual abuse, and still have the life you dreamed of. For others, I’d love it if the film shines a light on what it is like to live as a survivor every day.”

“All About Nina” marks Vives’ feature debut. The pic premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in April and hits theaters September 28.

Winstead’s credits include “10 Cloverfield Lane,” “Smashed,” and “The Thing.”
