“Heathers” is back and nastier than ever. A red-band trailer has dropped for Paramount Network’s reboot of the beloved 1988 dark comedy, and the mean clique at the center of the story looks decidedly different than the original Heathers, all of whom were cis-gender, thin white girls. “Fat kids can be popular,” and Asians too, we’re told in the spot. “Gays and Jews are over,” but genderqueer is in. Not everything has changed: lunch-time polls are still a thing, and Veronica’s diary remains a vital part of the story.
“I wish Heather Chandler (Melanie Field) would just die so that I can finally be free,” says Veronica (Grace Victoria Cox). As is the case in the film, the show sees Veronica plotting the murder of her frenemy alongside her new boyfriend, J.D. (James Scully), who is described as a “domestic terrorist” and “teenage Charles Manson.”
Veronica was originally played by Winona Ryder, J.D. by Christian Slater, and Heather Chandler by Kim Walker.
“Heathers” premieres March 7. “Sleeping with Other People” writer-director Leslye Headland helmed the pilot. Check out the trailer to catch a peak of Shannen Doherty, who is reprising her role as Heather Duke.
