Trailer Watch: Melissa McCarthy Tracks Down a Killer in Puppet Comedy “The Happytime Murders”

"The Happytime Murders"

Melissa McCarthy’s new movie takes place in a world where puppets and humans co-exist, but it shouldn’t be mistaken for family-friendly fare. A newly released Red Band trailer for the comedy makes its intended audience abundantly — even painfully — clear. The footage for “The Happytime Murders” includes an extended scene of a puppet ejaculating. “Sesame Street” this is not.

Set in the underbelly of Los Angeles, the pic sees McCarthy playing a detective investigating an unusual crime spree. As her fellow officer — a puppet — explains, “Someone out there is killing puppets.” The trailer doesn’t connect the murders besides acknowledging that the victims are puppets, but the film’s synopsis reveals that the murdered puppets are former cast members of an ’80s television show.

In the process of hunting down the perpetrator(s), McCarthy’s character is forced to take unusual-looking ecstasy. Her reaction to the drugs is priceless.

McCarthy can currently be seen in “Life of the Party,” in theaters now. She also co-wrote the comedy about a middle-aged mom who enrolls at her daughter’s college. Her upcoming projects include Andrea Berloff’s mob drama “The Kitchen” and Marielle Heller’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”, a biopic of celebrity biographer and infamous forger Lee Israel.

Check out the NSFW trailer for “The Happytime Murders” below. The R-rated pic opens August 17.
