Trailer Watch: Mia Wasikowska Moves Into a Haunted House with Jessica Chastain in ‘Crimson Peak’

“Ghosts are real. That much I know. I’ve seen them all my life.” So begins the spooky trailer for “Crimson Peak,” a gorgeous-looking gothic horror starring Mia Wasikowska as Edith, a newlywed author. Her Prince Charming (Tom Hiddleston) isn’t quite what he seems, a fact that becomes disturbingly clear when the fairy tale mansion he welcomes his new bride into turns out to be a veritable haunted house.

“There are parts of the house that are unsafe,” warns Edith’s new sister-in-law, played by a delightfully icy — and rather menacing — Jessica Chastain. The trailer suggests that there are many parts of the house that present a danger to Edith, including a tap that produces bloody water and intensely creepy corpse-creatures that emerge from under the floorboards — they’re bloody too, of course. Based on this preview, “Crimson Peak” lives up to its bloody name with gore galore. The real horror, though, is the atmosphere of the house. Edith may have seen ghosts all her life, but it’s doubtful that she’s seen ghosts quite so full of rage as these ones.

Edith asks, “Has anyone died in this house?” Based on the suspicious behavior of her new husband and his sister, the question she ought to be asking is, “Who killed someone in this house?” and whether she’ll be their next victim.

Catch “Crimson Peak” in theatres October 16.
