Trailer Watch: Mia Wasikowska Vows to Punish a Crime in “Judy & Punch”

"Judy & Punch"

A live-action reinterpretation of the 16th-century puppet show, “Judy & Punch” sees Judy (Mia Wasikowska) taking on her abuser, a renowned puppeteer who deserves less credit than his more skillful wife. A new trailer for Mirrah Foulkes’ feature debut has landed. The footage reveals how Punch’s (Damon Herriman) neglect of his and Judy’s baby leads to a tragic accident. The ensuing fight between the couple results in Judy’s death — at least that’s what Punch thinks.

Brutally beaten and left for dead, Judy has survived her husband’s attack, but just barely. Punch tells their small town that his wife and child have been killed at the hands of “heathens.”

Convinced that if she doesn’t go back to confront Punch “he wins,” Judy vows that “he won’t be winning anymore.” She’d rather risk her life to exact vengeance than skip town. “No great crime should go unpunished,” she says.

Best known for “Alice in Wonderland” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” Wasikowska’s other credits include “Jane Eyre,” “Stoker,” and “The Kids Are All Right.” She stars in “Bergman Island,” Mia Hansen-Løve’s upcoming English-language debut.

“Judy & Punch” made its world premiere at Sundance 2019 and hits theaters and VOD June 5.
