Charmed by “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” but craving a romance that takes place post-high school? Netflix has got you covered. The streamer just dropped a trailer for “Been So Long,” a Camden-set musical about the love story between a cynical single mom and a man with a troubled past.
The pic introduces a new side of “Chewing Gum’s” hilarious star, Michaela Coel. “Been So Long” sees her playing Simone, who, unlike sex-crazed Tracey, has long given up on romance. She teaches her daughter that it’s them “against the whole wide world,” but a chance encounter with a stranger seems to make her reconsider that stance.
“It’s funny how you can feel so lonely and never know it,” she sings to Raymond (Arinze Kene, “Crazyhead”), the new man in her life.
But Raymond comes with baggage — including an ankle monitor. It’s unclear what exactly happened in his past, but he admits he was “an idiot” and “unlucky.”
Coel can currently be seen in”Black Earth Rising,” an eight-part BBC Two/Netflix series that sees her playing a law investigator who was rescued as a child during the Rwandan genocide. The show premiered in September. Coel is also signed on to topline and write “Jan 22,” a BBC series about sexual consent and dating.
The “Last Jedi” actress will reprise her tole as Tracey in Season 3 of “Chewing Gum,” but there’s no word on a premiere date just yet.
Directed by Tinge Krishnan (“Junkhearts,” “The Exorcist”), “Been So Long” hits Netflix October 26.
