Michelle Monaghan is giving her all to make America great in a new trailer for “Saint Judy.” Based on real events, the drama tells the story of U.S. immigration attorney Judy Wood, who made history with her first case.
The single mom represents Asefa (Leem Lubany, “Condor”), a woman who fled her home country following her arrest by the Taliban. “I wanted everyone to know that girls should think for themselves,” Asefa, who started a school for girls, says. The case’s judge (Alfre Woodard, “Luke Cage”) applauds Asefa’s actions, and is sorry to explain that “the law of asylum does not recognize women as a protected class.”
If Asefa returns home, her male family members will kill her, so Judy refuses to give up. She’s determined to appeal the case and secure Asfefa’s freedom — and freedom for thousands of other women around the world.
Monaghan received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the first season of “True Detective.” “Mission Impossible: Fallout” and “The Path” are among her recent credits. She stars in “Messiah,” an upcoming Netflix series depicting the world’s reaction to a man in the Middle East claiming to be the Messiah.
“Saint Judy” hits select theaters March 1 and expands March 8.
