“I am from the south side of Chicago. That tells you as much about me as you need to know,” says Michelle Obama in a new trailer for Nadia Hallgren’s “Becoming.” The Netflix documentary follows the former First Lady, author, and lawyer as she embarks on a 34-city tour “that highlights the power of community to bridge our divides and the spirit of connection that comes when we openly and honestly share our stories,” according to its official synopsis.
Obama explains that she grew up in a typical working-class community that offered “some good music, some good BBQ, [and] some good times.” When her guidance counselor decided that Obama was “reaching too high” with her career ambitions, Obama ignored her input and pursued her dreams.
Asked how she, as a black women, has persevered, Obama explains, “We can’t afford to wait for the world to be equal to start feeling seen.”
Michelle and Barack Obama have a production deal with Netflix. Their exec producing credits include Oscar winner “American Factory” and Sundance winner “Crip Camp.”
“Becoming” shares a name with Obama’s best-selling 2018 memoir. You can catch the doc on Netflix beginning May 6.
