Trailer Watch: Michelle Williams and Hong Chau Are Feuding Artists in Kelly Reichardt’s “Showing Up”

"Showing Up"

A trailer has arrived for Michelle Williams and Kelly Reichardt’s fourth collaboration, “Showing Up.” Set in Portland, the drama tells the story of Lizzie (Williams), a ceramicist struggling to make a name for herself in the art world.

With an important show just a week away, Lizzie finds herself feuding with two fellow artists. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do without hot water,” she tells her landlady, Jo (Hong Chau, “The Whale”), who is also a student at the school Lizzie is studying at. Jo refuses to get the problem fixed because she has two shows of her own coming up. “You’re not the only one with a deadline,” Lizzie reminds her.

Lizzie is also feeling resentful about a student in her program being touted as a “genius.” She’s not buying into the hype, and seems equally unimpressed by his work as his personality.

Williams previously starred in three of Reichardt’s other features: 2008’s “Wendy and Lucy,” 2010’s “Meek’s Cutoff,” and 2016’s “Certain Women.” The four-time Oscar nominee is eyeing her fifth nom for her leading role in “The Fabelmans,” Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film about an aspiring filmmaker. The Emmy-winning “Fosse/Verdon” actress recently received a Performer Tribute at the Gotham Awards.

Besides her collaborations with Williams, Reichardt’s other films include “First Cow” and “Night Moves.”

“Showing Up” premiered at Cannes earlier this year and hits theaters in 2023.
