Midge’s double life looks like it’s about to become even more complicated in the second season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” “One year ago my old life ended, and my new life began,” the rising standup comic announces in the newly-dropped trailer. But only a few people know that she embarked on a comedy career after her husband (Michael Zegen) left her,
“I want to be successful, but I haven’t told my friends or my parents — except my ex,” Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) tells her manager, Susie (Alex Borstein). Meanwhile, her parents suspect something’s up, but don’t think it’s anything a new husband can’t fix. “Marry somebody, and everything will be fine,” Midge’s father (Tony Shalhoub) insists.
And he’s not the only person to pigeon-hole Midge. Before taking to the stage, another (male) comedian makes this not-so-charming introduction: “We got a girl comic coming up. Don’t get too excited, fellas: she keeps her clothes on.”
But, like any good standup, Midge gives as good as she gets. “Men in general run around telling everyone that only men are funny,” she says during her set. “Comedy is fueled by disappointment and humiliation — now who the hell does that describe more than women?”
Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino of “Gilmore Girls” fame, “Maisel” swept the Emmys this year. It won eight trophies, including best comedy actress for Brosnahan, best supporting actress in a comedy for Borstein, and best comedy series. Sherman-Palladino made history by becoming the first woman to win both best comedy writing and best comedy directing.
Season 2 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” begins streaming on Amazon December 5. It’s already been renewed for a third season.
