Stand aside, Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is a little bit weirder, a little bit darker and features the wondrous Eva Green (“Penny Dreadful”).
According to the official synopsis for the film, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” tells the story of a young lad named Jake (Asa Butterfield, “Ender’s Game”) who “discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, [when] he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted and who he really is.”
Based on the bestselling novel by Ransom Riggs, the film was directed by Tim Burton, and certainly looks it, in all of his creepy glory. Green, who stuns in her role as Vanessa on “Penny Dreadful,” seems to bring some of the dark mystery and supernatural spookiness from that role to this character as well.
With weighted shoes holding down a girl imbued with the powers of air, a child who eats out of the back of her head and a pair of scary looking twins, the peculiarity of the story certainly shines through in this spot for the film.
Judi Dench, Allison Janney and Ella Purnell (“Maleficent”) also appear. “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” will open in theaters on September 30.
