Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, and Jessie Buckley are mothers in crisis in “The Lost Daughter,” Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut. An adaptation of the Elena Ferrante novel, the film sees a woman dealing with painful, long-buried memories while on a seemingly idyllic vacation. Its trailer has just dropped.
When she meets young mother Nina (Johnson) on the beach, Leda (Colman) claims she “can’t remember much” about her daughters’ childhoods. But she does stress that “children are a crushing responsibility.” Spending time with the overwhelmed Nina and her daughter causes Leda to reflect on her early days of motherhood.
In flashback, we see a 20-something Leda (Buckley) struggling with the demands of raising two young children. “I’m suffocating,” she tells her husband.
Gyllenhaal won Venice Film Festival’s Best Screenplay honor for “The Lost Daughter.” The pic, which Gyllenhaal also produced, has played at New York and BFI London film festivals as well.
“Best Summer Ever” and “The Deuce” are among Gyllenhaal’s more recent acting credits. She received an Academy Award nomination for her supporting role in “Crazy Heart.”
Colman won an Emmy last month for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown.” You can catch the Oscar-winning “Favourite” actress next in romantic drama “Mothering Sunday,” set for release November 19. Johnson was last seen in music industry comedy “The High Note” and Buckley in PBS’ “Great Performances: Romeo & Juliet.”
“The Lost Daughter” arrives in select theaters December 17, and will begin streaming on Netflix December 31.
