“Loyal, brave, and true — it is my duty to protect my family,” explains Hua Mulan (Yifei Liu) in a new trailer for Disney’s live-action “Mulan.” China is under attack from Northern invaders, and she has no plans to stand idly by while her country goes to war. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that every family must send one son to serve in the Imperial Army, Mulan’s dad, an honored warrior and father to two daughters, has no choice but to offer himself. Her father’s health is failing, and she’s determined to take his place, so she disguises herself as a man.
Despite being warned that she’ll be shown “no mercy” when others find out who she is, Mulan persists. “I will bring honor to us all,” she vows.
Disney’s animated version of “Mulan” was released in 1998. Niki Caro directed the upcoming live-action pic, which is set to bow in spring 2020. Caro’s previous credits include “McFarland, USA,” “North Country,” and “Whale Rider.”
