A new trailer for Disney’s live-action take on “Mulan” sees Yifei Liu taking the oath of the warrior, committing to be “loyal,” “brave,” and “true.” China is under attack from Northern invaders, and Mulan (Liu) refuses to stand idly by while her country goes to war.
When the Emperor of China issues a decree that every family must send one son to serve in the Imperial Army, Mulan’s dad, an honored warrior in ailing health, has no choice but to offer himself since he is the father of two daughters. Determined to take his place, Mulan disguises herself as a man, and despite her mother’s fears that she’ll be killed in battle, she shines, earning the reputation of being a formidable warrior — and attracting the attention of her enemies.
The Northern invaders have a witch fighting alongside them. “You’ll die pretending to be something you are not,” she tells Mulan.
Disney’s animated version of “Mulan” was released in 1998. Niki Caro directed the upcoming live-action pic, which hits theaters March 27. Caro’s previous credits include “McFarland, USA,” “North Country,” and “Whale Rider.”
