Trailer Watch: Nana Mensah Inherits Her Mother’s Bookstore in Tribeca Winner “Queen of Glory”

"Queen of Glory": Tribeca Film Festival

“You don’t have to be your mother. You have to define you,” Nana Mensah is told in a new trailer for “Queen of Glory.” The multi-hyphenate’s directorial debut sees her starring as Sarah, a doctoral student on the brink of a major life change when tragedy strikes. Sarah is weeks away from moving from New York City to follow her married boyfriend to Ohio when her mother dies. She leaves Sarah her business, a Christian bookstore located in the tight-knit Ghanian immigrant community that she was raised in.

Faced with planning her mother’s funeral and figuring out what to do with the store, Sarah becomes increasingly overwhelmed with all that’s being asked of her — and seems to start reconsidering her future.

“I want people to ponder the first generation and immigrant experiences with more fullness,” Mensah, whose on-screen credits include “The Chair” and “New Amsterdam,” told us.

“Queen of Glory” hits theaters July 15. Mensah won Best New Narrative Director at the 2021 edition of Tribeca Film Festival for the pic, which also received two Indie Spirit Award nominations. Mensah penned its script.
