Trailer Watch: Natalie Morales Celebrates Long-Distance Friendship in SXSW Winner “Language Lessons”

"Language Lessons"

Borders and distance can’t keep Natalie Morales and Mark Duplass apart in “Language Lessons,” a tribute to long-distance friendship. The comedy sees Cariño (Morales), a Spanish teacher living in Costa Rica, hired for a new gig. Adam’s (Mark Duplass) husband surprises him with weekly online Spanish lessons with her — 100 hours worth of them. Adam isn’t thrilled with the gift, but Cariño quickly wins him over with her charms.

A new trailer for the SXSW winner shows Cariño and Adam bonding in their respective homes. Whether poolside or by the piano, the pair remain connected via Wi-Fi. “The truth is that I’m a little lost,” Adam eventually admits. After tragedy strikes, Cariño becomes a lifeline for him.

Morales directed “Language Lessons” and penned its script with Duplass. The film took home the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award at SXSW earlier this year.

“Language Lessons” marks Morales’ second directorial effort to be released this year. “Plan B,” her comedy about teens racing against the clock in search of the morning after pill in America’s heartland, launched on Hulu in May.

“Dead to Me,” “Battle of the Sexes,” and “Abby’s” are among Morales’ on-screen credits.

Asked what actions need to be taken to make Hollywood more inclusive, the multi-hyphenate told us, “As I have said before and will continue to say and do: We need to tell stories about marginalized people that aren’t only about how they are marginalized. That only continues to otherize us. We have full lives and thoughts and loves and fears that have nothing to do with the people or things that have oppressed us, and those stories are worth telling because they are deeply necessary for us (others) to see.”

“Language Lessons” hits select theaters September 10.
