Trailer Watch: Natalie Portman Sets the Record Straight in “Jackie”

“Jackie”

“People like to believe in fairy tales,” says Jacqueline Kennedy (Natalie Portman) in a newly released trailer for “Jackie.” “I believe that the characters we read about on the page end up being more real than the men who stand beside us,” she explains.

“Jackie” offers an uncomfortably close and intimate portrait of one of the most iconic First Ladies, Jackie Kennedy. Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film takes place in the immediate aftermath of JFK’s assassination, and centers around an interview Jackie has with a journalist from Life Magazine. “I’ve grown accustomed to a great divide between what people believe and what I know to be real,” she tells her interviewer.

The drama sees Jackie reliving her emotional reaction to her husband’s death, contemplating her uncertain future, and fighting to honor JFK’s legacy by paying tribute to him with a grandiose funeral. “There should be more horses, more soldiers, more crying, more cameras,” she insists.

“Jackie” opens in select theaters December 2. The film made its World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, and Portman has been considered a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination since.
