Lucia Aniello’s “Rough Night” is darker than your average R-rated comedy. What begins as a bachelorette party reuniting a group of friends (Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer, and Zoë Kravitz) ends with manslaughter by overeager lap dance. But the movie’s new trailer suggests that, if you’re going to be in a situation as horrible as this, you should face it with your college friends.
“I don’t even know why we go to these stupid parties,” Jess (Johansson) complains to her roommates Frankie (Glazer), Alice (Bell), and Blair (Kravitz) in a college-set flashback. “I just want to hang out with you guys.” Even when they do go to those stupid parties, the girls only talk to each other. A cut to a frat’s Halloween party reveals the four playing beer pong — and ignoring everyone else.
“Someday our kids are gonna play together,” Jess drunkenly vows to her friends as they post-game in the dorm. And someday the ladies, with the help of Jess’ study abroad friend Pippa (McKinnon), will cover up an accidental murder together. Because what happens to college friends stays between college friends.
“Rough Night,” written by Aniello and Paul W. Downs, opens June 16.
