An urban legend racks up a body count in a new trailer for “Candyman.” Described as a “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 pic of the same name, Nia DaCosta’s latest sees an artist determined to revive the Candyman’s deadly spirit.
When Anthony (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, “Watchmen”) moves into the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the Candyman legend began, he relishes hearing about the mysterious figure, and becomes determined to “spread the story.” The story goes that if you say his name five times while looking in the mirror, the Candyman appears in the reflection and kills you.
Desperate to keep his career afloat and aware of the story’s macabre appeal, Anthony decides to launch an installation devoted to the Candyman. “The mirror invites you to summon him,” he tells attendees. “You should say his name. I dare you.”
DaCosta made her feature debut with “Little Woods,” one of Women and Hollywood’s favorite films of 2019. The North Dakota-set drama sees Tessa Thompson and Lily James playing sisters who resort to working outside the law to settle the mortgage on their mother’s house.
“Candyman” hits theaters June 12.
