Nina Hoss develops an unhealthy obsession with her student in a new trailer for “The Audition.” Ina Weisse’s drama tells the story of Anna (Hoss), a violin teacher determined to prepare her pre-teen pupil, Alexander (Ilja Monti), for his end-of-year exam at any cost.
“Practice is letting a piece enter your body,” Anna explains. “It has to be part of you.” Despite practicing four hours a day, Alexander is told that he needs to devote more time to the instrument.
Anna’s fixation comes at the expense of her relationships with her husband and son. Begging Anna to “show some restraint” and consider their neglected child’s feelings, her husband insists, “The violin is a tiny part of life.”
“Pelican Blood,” “Homeland,” and “A Most Wanted Man” are among Hoss’ previous credits.
Weiss made her feature debut with 2008’s “The Architect.” She co-wrote “The Audition” with Daphne Charizani. The film made its world premiere at last year’s edition of the Toronto international Film Festival and hits select U.S. theaters and VOD June 26.
