Trailer Watch: Nola Darling Commits to Opal and Her Art in “She’s Gotta Have It” Season 2

"She's Gotta Have It"

“This love shit is a motherfucker,” Nola Darling laments in the trailer for Season 2 of Netflix’s “She’s Gotta Have It.” After a season of juggling three male lovers and trying to hone her artistic vision, Nola (DeWanda Wise) has committed herself to one person, Opal (Ilfenesh Hadera), and is newly passionate about her work.

“My ambition for the summer is to create like I’ve never created, to be the best partner to my partner that I can be, [and] to get that shmoney,” Nola announces in the spot. But, of course, things don’t go according to plan.

Nola, known for her paintings, begins taking up photography. But people only seem to be interested in her past work, particularly her feminist, anti-sexual harassment street art campaign “My Name Isn’t,” which has been co-opted for a bus ad. “I do not want to be more famous for an ad than for my art,” Nola says.

Things aren’t much easier with Opal, who is a single mother. Nola — not exactly the dependable type — is getting close with Opal’s daughter, Skylar (Indigo Hubbard-Salk). “Skylar needs to know that she does not have two mommies,” Opal warns Nola. In other words, Opal is prepared for Nola to break her heart, but not her daughter’s.

Check out the trailer for glimpses of Nola’s friends Shemekka (Chyna Layne) and Clorinda’s (Margot Bingham) own romantic adventures this season.

Created by Spike Lee, “She’s Gotta Have It” is based on the Oscar winner’s 1986 feature directorial debut of the same name. Playwrights Lynn Nottage and Jocelyn Bioh are among the series’ writers. The former also produces.

Wise most recently appeared in Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s rom-com “Someone Great.” Her other screen credits include “The Weekend,” “Shots Fired,” and “Underground.” She starred in Donja R. Love’s Off-Broadway play “Fireflies” last fall.

“She’s Gotta Have It’s” second season drops on Netflix May 24.
