Trailer Watch: Olivia Munn Is a Film Exec On the Verge of a Breakdown in Justine Bateman’s “Violet”

"Violet"

“The way I’ve always been doing things just doesn’t work now. I want to be free,” says Olivia Munn in a new trailer for “Violet.” The “Newsroom” alumna plays an LA-based film executive who is determined to transform her life in Justine Bateman’s feature directorial debut.

Tortured by an abusive inner voice that tells her she’s a “baby,” “gross,” “fat,” and “a loser,” Violet decides to stop listening and follow her instincts instead. “I’ve been telling myself to do certain things, act a certain way or else something bad will happen to me,” she explains. “Maybe you cast yourself in a part you don’t want to play anymore,” a friend observes.

Violet is no longer willing to put up with a boss who humiliates her in front of clients and stifling her overwhelming anxieties. She’s ready to embrace her true self, but realizes that authenticity will come at a price.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Office Christmas Party” are among Munn’s big screen credits.

Best known for her role as Mallory Keaton in “Family Ties,” Bateman’s other acting credits include “Desperate Housewives” and “Men in Trees.” She wrote and directed shorts “PUSH” and “Five Minutes.”

“Violet” hits theaters October 29 and VOD November 9. The film made its world premiere at SXSW.
