Trailer Watch: Oprah Offers Words of Wisdom in “A Wrinkle in Time”

“A Wrinkle in Time”

When Oprah Winfrey talks, everybody listens. The mogul and recent Cecil B. DeMille Award winner has a lot to say in the new trailer for Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time.” The big-budget sci-fi centers on Meg (Storm Reid), a girl determined to find her father (Chris Pine), a scientist who has gone missing.

Mrs. Which (Winfrey) warns Meg that she’s “going to be tested every step of the way” during her journey through time and space, but urges, “have faith in who you are.” Only Meg can save her father — and she’ll need to “be a warrior” to complete her mission. Fittingly, the spot is set to Alessia Cara’s empowerment anthem “Scars to Your Beautiful.”

DuVernay accepted the Visionary Award at the PGA Awards this weekend. “We have moments where people like me are at an intersection of Black Lives Matter and Me Too and Time’s Up. In short, we’re in the midst of times that will be long remembered, and I can’t help but ask the question of how will we be remembered in these times,” she said.

The “Selma” director emphasized that “we should be remembered for the work that we put in this world. Even more importantly is the way that we work. The people that we actually choose to see, that we choose to amplify in the moments when no one is looking and the moments when everyone is looking.” Regarding inclusion, she said, “It’s not a trend, it’s a reality — a reality that our industry has betrayed in so many ways over the decades. So not to think of diversity as a good thing to do, think of it as an absolute must, something that must be done.”

Based on Madeleine L’Engle’s beloved 1963 fantasy novel of the same name, “A Wrinkle in Time” hits theaters March 9. Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling co-star.
