Trailer Watch: ‘Our Little Sister’ Might Be This Year’s ‘Mustang’

“Our Little Sister,” another foreign Cannes 2015 favorite, is finally hitting the U.S. and a new trailer has premiered making the film seem like it may be this year’s “Mustang.” (I.e. a critically-acclaimed sister-centric film that we love.)

“Our Little Sister” was adapted from Yoshida Akimi’s best-selling graphic novel “Umimachi Diary.” It tells the story of three sisters learning about a younger half-sister’s existence.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “Three twenty-something sisters — Sachi, Yoshino and Chika — live together in a large old house in the seaside town of Kamakura. When they learn of their estranged father’s death, they decide to travel to the countryside for his funeral. There they meet their shy teenage half-sister Suzu for the first time and, bonding quickly, invite her to live with them. Suzu eagerly agrees, and begins a new life with her older sisters.”

“Our Little Sister” won Best Film at the 2016 Japan Academy Awards. The four actresses who play the sisters were all nominated as well. Haruka Ayase (who plays Sachi) was nominated for Best Leading Actress, while Masami Nagasawa (Yoshino) and Kaho (Chika) were nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Suzu Hirose, who plays the youngest sister, won Newcomer of the Year.

Like “Mustang,” “Our Little Sister” shows the incredible bonds of sisterhood and how women faced with adversity find strength in family and friendship. From the trailer, the imagery looks stunning and story powerful.

“Our Little Sister” will open in the U.S. on July 18.
