A portrait of six diverse American towns is coming to HBO. Based on Deborah and James Fallows’ bestselling book of the same name, “Our Towns” sees Oscar-nominated filmmakers Jeanne Jordan and Steven Ascher (“Troublesome Creek: A Midwestern”) traveling to San Bernardino, CA; Sioux Falls, SD; Columbus, MS; Eastport, ME; Charleston, WV; and Bend, OR to spotlight local initiatives and explore how civil leaders, immigrants, environmentalists, students, educators, and artists are building a better tomorrow in their communities.
“We thought there must be something going on in America. People wanted to talk about their town,” says Deborah Fallows in a trailer for the documentary.
“The past is the past, and Mississippi is striving for change,” one character says.
Another adds, “We need to replace judgement with compassion, and we need to replace punishment with treatment.”
“Our Towns” promises to provide an “expansive perspective on America that finds unexpected connections between personal stories, community actions, and the arc of history” in its official synopsis. The doc debuts April 13.
